France is a country located in Western Europe.
To the north, France borders Belgium and Luxembourg, to the north-east, Germany and Switzerland to the east, Italy to the south-east and Spain to the south-west, across the Pyrenees mountain range with the small country of Andorra lying between the two countries.
The Mediterranean Sea lies to the south of France, with the Principality of Monaco forming a small enclave. To the west, France has a long Atlantic Ocean coastline, while to the north lies the English Channel, across which lies England.
France is the most popular tourist destination of the world with dozens of major tourist attractions, like Paris, the French Riviera, Atlantic beaches, winter sport resorts of the Alps, the Chateaux of Loire Valley, Brittany and Mont Saint Michel.
The country is renowned for its gastronomy (particularly wines and cheeses), history, culture and fashion. France is the home of wine. It can be found cheaply just about anywhere. Beer (lager) is also extremely popular, in particular in the northern part of the country.
Hotels are in 4 categories from 1 to 4 stars given by the Ministry of Tourism, and it is posted at the entrance on a blue shield. Rates vary according to accommodation, location and sometimes high or low season or special events. All hotels, by law, have their rates posted outside (or visible from outside) and bargaining is not usual.
Hotels located in city centres or near train stations are often very small (15 to 30 rooms) which means that you should book ahead. The newer business oriented hotels are in the outskirts of cities and are sometimes larger structures with(100 rooms or more. They may not be easy to reach with public transport. Along the highways, at the entrance of cities, are motels.
When visiting Paris, it is essential to stay in the city. The Latin Quarter is a good location if you plan on visiting a variety of attractions.
